Over the years I have been fortunate enough to sell to quite a few specialized markets such as Fantasy & Science Fiction, Air & Space/Smithsonian, and even the classic science fiction/science fact periodical, Omni. As the publishing business gradually changed, so too did markets for science and fantasy cartoons. These dwindled, including one of my favorites, Cortlandt Forum, a magazine whose demise was bemoaned by cartoonists of all stripes.
After submitting it in 1994 to a fantasy genre publication (and subsequently receiving a polite rejection slip), my 'computer simulation' cartoon sat quietly in a filing cabinet until late 1995 when I shook it from its lethargy and submitted it again, this time to the Cortlandt Forum. Happily, the editors not only bought the cartoon, but placed it on the cover!
The idea for the cartoon came from looking at some of the popular "machine-readable" fonts used at that time by banks and businesses. I liked the look, and inked the computer font over a sunrise. And of course, no cartoon would be complete without the obligatory surprised/bewildered cartoon observer in the foreground!
